The Clearinghouse is funded by grants from the U.S. Department of Education with oversight by the Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools.

Created in 1997 by the U.S. Department of Education and managed by the National Institute of Building Sciences, the National Clearinghouse for Educational Facilities (NCEF) provides information on planning, designing, funding, building, improving, and maintaining safe, healthy, high performance schools.
NCEF Staff Allen Abend, RA (email) Educational Facilities Consultant Mr. Abend has over 30 years of experience with the Maryland Public School Construction Program and is author of the NCEF publication Planning and Designing for Students with Disabilities. James Ansley, PhD (email) Dr. Ansley, an expert on school accessibility matters, has written two NCEF publications, Creating Accessible Schools and The Garrett Case and Public School Accessibility. Edward Brzezowski, PE (email) Noveda Technologies Mr. Brzezowski, a professional engineer and a former school district facilities manager, consults on school facilities matters, particularly energy efficiency. Daniel Dancu, PhD (email) President, Ingraham Dancu Associates Dr. Dancu, a former school administrator, is a nationally known school facilities planner. Daniel Duke, EdD (email) Professor, Curry School of Education, University of Virginia Dr. Duke's most recent books are The Little School System That Could and Education Empire: The Evolution of an Excellent Suburban School System. He is author of numerous other books and papers. Mary Filardo (email) Executive Director, 21st Century School Fund Ms. Filardo has written extensively on public school facility issues and innovative financing solutions. She also heads the Building Educational Success Together (BEST) initiative, a collaborative effort to improve urban school facilities. Kelvin Lee, EdD (email) Dry Creek Joint Elementary School District, Roseville, California (retired) Dr. Lee is active in California and nationally on school facilities issues and is past president of the Coalition for Adequate School Housing. Pam Loeffelman, FAIA (email) Perkins Eastman Architects PC Ms. Loeffelman is a Principal at Perkins Eastman, with expertise in educational facilities. She is a vice-president of the American Institute of Architects and was the 2005 Chair of AIA's Committee on Architecture for Education. Jack Lyons (email) U.S. Department of Education, retired Mr. Lyons was instrumental in the creation of NCEF and served as the Department's contract manager for the Clearinghouse until his retirement in 2002. Joseph Nathan, PhD Director, Center for School Change, Macalester College Dr. Nathan, nationally known for his advocacy of small and charter schools, is author of many books and publications, including Smaller, Safer, Saner Successful Schools, published by NCEF. Henry Sanoff, AIA (email) Retired Distinguished Professor of Architecture, North Carolina State University Professor Sanoff is author of many respected school facilities publications, including School Design and Creating Environments for Children, two classics in their field. C. Milton Wilson (email) Iowa Department of Education (retired) Mr. Wilson was school facilities consultant for the Iowa Department of Education for many years. Barbara Worth (email) Associate Executive Director, CEFPI Foundation & Charitable Trust Ms. Worth is responsible for the general operations and affairs of the Council of Educational Facility Planners International Foundation & Charitable Trust, an organization established to foster research and scholarly study regarding the impact of school facilities on student achievement and the communities they serve.
