The facility integrates Blackfeet Indian native culture into every aspect of the design, including the orientation of the main entrance facing the east, and a canopy resembling the shape of a tipi. The Sun, Moon, Big Dipper, Pleiades, and Morning Star are all honored in the buildings orientation and interior design. A circular seating pattern in the classrooms continue the Tribes tradition of storytelling and creates a more meaningful learning environment, improving curriculum, and teaching methods that support Blackfeet cultural ways in a modern society. 1p.

This study involved an in-depth floor space analysis of Cardozo Senior High School, and a review of design plans for a modernized McKinley Tech High School (both in Washington, DC), in order to prompt District of Columbia public schools to develop accurate measurements of useable (i.e., net) floor space, thereby allowing design standards flexible enough to accommodate old and historic schools. Detailed findings from the floor space analyses led to the following recommendations: (1) revise the standard specs to allow greater flexibility so that existing high schools will not face a complete demolition of their interiors at extremely high cost; (2) change the floor space design standard value or eliminate its use altogether; (3) calculate the quantity of net floor space by measuring instructional and administrative space, thereby helping with the determination of enrollment capacities; (4) reexamine the quantity of total existing gross floor space, which is critical to the determination of excess space; and (5) undertake site studies to determine whether structured parking or other improvements are possible to alleviate site constraint problems. A Study of the Architecture and Curriculum of Virginia High Schools.

Provides a written and pictorial history of the architectural and curricular features of Virginia high schools. 284 high school buildings which best represented an architectural period, beginning with the oldest high school building still in use to the most recently constructed schools, were surveyed. Seventeen schools were chosen based on: 1) date of original construction; 2) completeness of original structure; 3) overall rating by the building principal; 4) noteworthy architectural or unique educational features; and 5) subjective comparison of floor plans and photographs. Each building was visited to obtain data relating to curricular emphasis in the design. Profiles this new British high school that combines cost-effectiveness with student-led design and extremely high levels of innovation. Its distinctive oval and aerodynamic shape means it needs less energy to heat or cool and its orientation was specifically planned to maximize daylight but minimize over-heating. The multi-layered, open-plan interior of the building has also been constructed to maximize natural daylight. Its domed roof places an emphasis on allowing natural light into the building, and very few ceilings have been installed between its three floors. The design avoids the use of square classrooms, and incorporates triangular teaching spaces to create a 360 degree teaching environment which enables the teacher to be the focus of the students, wherever they are in the room. Sustainability features include thermal solar panels for hot water and a natural air ventilation system which uses 'wind catchers' incorporated into the school's roof.

Several groups have had a dramatic impact on the design of the $51 million Little Village High School on Chicago's Southwest Side. They included residents of the Little Village neighborhood, the Chicago Public Schools, and the design and construction team itself. The "small schools" concept is driving the layout of the facility. Even though the structure will house 1,800 to 2,000 students, the 287,000-square-feet, two-story building will accommodate four separate schools. Each 450- to 500-student school will have its own administration, identity and principal, who will report to a master principal. But some spaces will be shared among the four schools, including the library and media center, two gymnasia, pool, cafeteria and 500-seat auditorium, as well as baseball and soccer fields outside.

Hardy Holzman Pfeiffer Associates design for the addition of an upper school to the Salisbury School in Maryland involved three separate structures: the central dome, the classroom wing, and the gymnasium. From the outside, the school resembles an assemblage of prefabricated parts, namely the dome, the corrugated-steel arches that links the domes to vinyl-sided wings, and the aluminum antennae that act as trellises. Inside, each classroom is unique in terms of its size, shape, and character.
